We all agree that road conditions in South Carolina are bad and there are several steps that can be taken to address some of the major problems that are systemic. In order for the State to make real progress on road repair, there needs to be real reform.
- Reform of the DOT is needed to make this an appointed position by the Governor, so real accountability can be enforced. At present, powerful legislatures appoint 7 of the 8 DOT commissioners and there is limited to no accountability with this system.
- Audit DOT spending and require full transparency in the awarding of construction contracts, in decision making over which projects are prioritized, and in how each dollar is spent.
